Teen pregnancy has become too common in this day and age. Some teens think it will not happen to them and do not use necessary precautions to protect against it. Teen mothers have higher rates of birth complications, a greater likelihood of experiencing psychological problems related to higher levels of stress, despair, depression, feelings of helplessness, low self-esteem, and a sense of personal failure. Another thing that teenagers have to realize is, if they choose to engage in sexual intercourse the best alternative would be to practice safe sex. Having unprotected sex can lead to harmful and life-threatening sexually transmitted infections and diseases. An estimated 25 percent of U.S. teens who engage in unprotected sex will eventually develop a sexually transmitted infection or STI like chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes and syphilis. Abstinence is 100% effective in preventing pregnancy. Birth control is a way for men and women to prevent pregnancy. There are many different methods of birth control; some types also protect against sexually transmitted diseases, or STDs. Condoms are one type of birth control that in addition to preventing pregnancy also prevent the spread of STDs. Although many birth control methods can have high rates of success if used properly, they can fail occasionally. Practicing abstinence ensures that a girl won't become pregnant because there's no opportunity for sperm to fertilize an egg. I agree with the article, because being safe with sex means caring for both your own health, and the health of your partner.
