Teen Pregnancy In Gwendolyn Brooks’ poem “The Mother,” a woman had more than one abortion and explains how hard it is to deal with the pain. She explains that it’s a pain that will never be forgotten and how the life of unborn children was taken away at her own wishes. Taking away the life of a child, especially your own, is the most difficult and heart ripping experience. But if a young teen gets pregnant, how accessible is abortion or any other alternative plans? How can a young teen with such raw emotions be prepared for any feeling like that? Yes, it is there fault for having sex or not practicing safe sex but were they taught anything about sex and the consequences it can have or how to even practice safe sex? The recent climb in teen pregnancy is at a record high, which many may say that it is due to many factors. Recently, teen pregnancy rates have sky rocketed. If teenagers ranging from 14 to 19 years old are getting pregnant then where does that leave them in life? A child can’t take care of a child. If elders were more caring and conscious of what is happening then there are possible answers to help and reduce teen pregnancy. Almost 90 out of 1000 teen girls were pregnant in 2000 with a gradual increase each year. Obviously, guidance is needed to teach and help the young girls. According to The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, there were nearly 750,000 pregnancies to women younger than 20. According to Lucia O’Sullivan, a psychology professor at the University of New Brunswick, states that “in many cases the teenage pregnancy rates reflect in some regard the educational and employment opportunities that young people see for themselves,” meaning that due to the economy most teens just seek whatever they can get if not motivated by themselves or others.
