Technology: The Evolution of the 21st Century
Today, we cannot imagine ourselves without technology such as cell phones, computers, and televisions. We spend more than half our waking hours online, on the phone, or watching television. However, technology will not stop here, but continue to develop further. As technology continues to develop, it is becoming more prominent in businesses, communication, and education. When technology transitioned into the workplace it became more than just a receptionist answering phones or scheduling appointments. Technology has turned the workplace into a technological environment. At one time, a patient would walk into a doctors’ office and sign in using the sign in sheet. With the latest technology, a patient can walk in and sign themselves in with two taps on the screen. Since this evolution, businesses are finding that they will no longer need to employ as many to get the job done. With technology becoming more advanced and efficient, it makes businesses convert to machines that can process and do the works of 10 people. Knowing that computers are now taking over the jobs of real, live humans people are becoming more and more realistic. Technology has not only changed the business world, but the communication world. “In the past, a person had to write letters or call on the telephone to communicate. Now, people can send e-mails or a text message and get an instant response. The internet also allows people to communicate through ‘chat rooms’ to meet new people that they will never see in person as well as stay in touch with old friends. Some of these great inventions are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and MySpace. On the flip side, technology has turned the 21st century into a disconnected society. No one knows how to sit down and have a face to face conversation and express our ideas clearly. The 21st century of technology has affected our ability to speak publicly and write formally.
