On January 31st, 2013. A group of researchers and scientists discovered that the most sensitive part of the skin of a mammal is not a human, but on the star nosed mole. Research showed that the star nosed mole has over 100,000 nerve endings in a patch of skin 1 centimeter in diameter. This discovery will help scientists; doctors and surgeons understand how nerve ending and the amount of nerve endings in a certain area of skin can affect the mediation, tolerance and perception of pain. This could help start the process of making new anesthetics and other pain medication. I would like to know how a scientist can figure out how pain is translated in the mind and how to know that a certain drug can affect the translation of pain considering that people’s tolerance of pain varies by the individual. I would enjoy going into depth about the mind and how scientists go about doing these experiments with nerve endings. I believe that this type of experiment is beyond our reach considering that there might be conflicting laws and or materials that are required for this type of length and detailed research.

Transforming skin cells into heart cells
On January 30th, 2013 a subtle disease called arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia/cardiomyopathy (ARVD/C) can apparently cured. A group of Japanese scientists broke through with a new algorithm for stem-cell regeneration process. With this new process the scientist can start beginning the testing of skin cells being transformed into heart cells. Although this a miracle on its own, the laws and regulations around the world slow the testing. Human rights organizations are calling for all testing to be stopped and the research be destroyed. They think that if one can grow new body parts, why can’t you create a new body or duplicate another? Further debate in Japan and over the world is still in session. For now they are approving it for those with ARVD/C. I think that at least discussing this in class would prove to be interesting.
