The Necessity for System Administrators System Administrators are extremely vital and crucial in companies today. A system administrator is someone who monitors the network and makes sure it is up and running for day to day operations.
“The importance of the system administrator's job has grown with the expanding number of computer devices, software packages and users. The greatest change is the increased level of complexity and responsibility that sysadmins face as the workplace becomes increasingly computerized. Even the simplest PC- or IP-based telephone becomes mission-critical.” (Hoffman). With today’s companies being ran primarily on a network it is vital that they have a system administrator to keep their company running smoothly. System Administrators are responsible for a vast array of tasks. The primary job of a system administrator is to design and build the computer network that the company uses. They are constantly upgrading and improving the network for security purposes. In addition the maintaining the network a system admin is usually required to fix and maintain a user’s device on the network. Users rely heavily on the sysadmin when their computer crashes during a big project for work.
In some cases the system administrator will also be responsible for the security of the network. This is becoming less common, at least with larger companies as they have recognized the value of having a security specialist. However at thousands of smaller companies the system admin is the one who is responsible for security. (Anonymous, 2012)
System administrators also maintain user’s accounts and passwords, maintain servers, and replace or fix any hardware and software issues that a user may face. Why do companies need system administrators? “Systems administrators are experts in the nuts and bolts of the company's IT engine, doing mundane but essential tasks every day to prevent problems and improve systems' performance.” (Perez, 2007). A company cannot function if a user is unable to do their work and if they are unable to access their computer then they are unable to do their work. This is where a system administrator steps in. This is why it is crucial for any company to hire a sysadmin. One might think you would need a great deal of training in order to become a system administrator, but that is not necessarily true. It is possible to enter this career field without a degree, but to progress further in your career it might become crucial to have a bachelor’s degree. “Many employers look for certifications from Cisco, CompTIA and Microsoft, but experts warn against thinking these alone will be enough to break into the field.” (Anonymous, 2012). With technology constantly changing it is import to maintain and stay up to date with training and certifications. As you can see a system administrator in charge of many tasks and complete an array of jobs. They make sure the network and its users are able to do their jobs to keep the company going.
