Teratogenic Effects Caused By Prenatal Exposure to Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors
By: Nick Denney
There is a natural, almost unavoidable risk associated with pregnancy: virtually everything the mother does will have some sort of effect on the developing child. The prenatal environment is very sensitive, and highly susceptible to external influences. Anything that the mother takes in, be it beneficial or not, will have an impact on the overall health of the child once it enters the world. This parasitic nutritional process will help determine the beneficial or hindering mental and physical health effects of the baby early on and, potentially, throughout its life. The nutrients come from external sources, such as food, drink, and medication. Obviously, food and drink have a (typically) positive effect on the fetus; vitamins and minerals cross into the placenta, allowing the baby to benefit from these supporting blocks. However, an often-overlooked aspect of the prenatal environment is the usage of medication. Nearly 14% of women continue taking antidepressants such as Prozac and Paxil during pregnancy, despite an increasing number of studies linking these medications to birth defects and developmental delays (FDA, 2006). One of the more alarming correlations recently uncovered is the potential link between the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and the increased risk of autism spectrum disorders. It is not a dramatic difference, but the fact there are measurable differences between the baseline risk and the increased risk is enough to encourage researchers to study this topic in depth. Be it in support of or against it, numerous studies have been done since the late 60’s, shortly after the thalidomide scare, to analyze the risk factors associated with virtually every drug used during pregnancy. Since antidepressants were not on the market until the 1950’s, the field of study involving this correlation is still relatively new, and there is no simple answer to whether there is a scientifically generalizable correlation between the two variables. However, the public is more than welcome to interpret the results of theses studies in whichever way they want. Researchers in favor of the pro-SSRI theory tend to create their own models, one of the major ones being the hyperserotonergic model; those who oppose the theory tend to derive their data from faults in studies or deliberately set out to disprove others. Regardless of stance, there are evident facts that cannot be avoided; these allow people to make an informed decision on whether to continue taking antidepressant medication during pregnancy and risk potential developmental problems, or find less-clinically supported, but almost on par in terms of effectiveness, ways of temporarily treating depression. The main goal of this research is to determine if there is any possible age effect associated with SSRI use during difference points in pregnancy, and what these abnormalities would entail. Depression is a very common condition in women, with its prevalence peaking during childbearing years. (Nulman et al, 1997). An estimated 8-20% of women will develop some symptoms of clinical depression at some point in their lives; 10-16% displays these symptoms during pregnancy, which are distinctly more common with the presence of a prior psychiatric diagnosis (Rahimi, Nikfar, & Abdollahi, 2006). SSRIs are among the most frequently prescribed antidepressant, yet there is so much we do not fully understand about it. Early studies (Chambers et al., 1996; Kulin, 1998) reported no increased risk in congenital deformations, but many of these were confounded by their small sample size and reliance on maternal recall. A major study aiming to expand on this hypothesis was done by Catherine Vasilakis-Scaramozza and her colleagues (of various departments of Boston University) in 2013. Ultimately, they found that SSRI use during pregnancy does not increase the risk for
Violence in Of Mice and Men Curley’s wife is shown as sweet and innocent but when she is in Crook’s room she uses violence on him because she is more powerful than him as he is black and she is white George admits that he has "beat the hell outta Lennie" Carlson tells Candy that he will be glad to shoot Candy's dog for him, "right in the back of the head" so the dog will "never know what hit him," as if Carlson is doing Candy some sort of favour When Lennie seriously damages Curley's hand in…
five letter word shaped the culture and life of the Puritan people. To them, faith wasn’t just a five letter word, it is a necessity. They put all their faith in God and look to him for every answer. In Act Two of The Crucible , sweet Rebecca Nurse is accused of witchcraft. Her faith and belief that God damns all liars keeps her from confessing; which leads to her hanging for a reason not worth her life (240). Rebecca Nurse is one of the few that chose to keep her faith, and not tell a lie to save her life and k…
are presented from the common man (Nick)’s perspective. The Great Gatsby defines the American identity which remains to this day. The Great Gatsby best defines the American identity of the rich, and their luxurious lifestyles in the eggs. Their sweet ignorance and worry-free lifestyles demonstrate the idea of the American Dream; something most Americans will never achieve. Daisy demonstrates the lifestyle of the bored, wealthy housewife best when she says: “I hope she'll be a fool - that's the…
thank Santos 3 you? I just ate and can't hold another bite? I am full God damn it of it... I cant go back and add more (83). Not only was she traumatized by the experience, but what she really could not comprehend was the fact that her husband had been there to witness it, "not stopping them—looking and letting it happen" (83). She acknowledges how other peoples brains stopped when faced with trauma, and how sweet it must have been for Halle. But because her children were well on their way…
had to write an essay back in May about the French and Indian War's effect on the relationship between Great Britain and its colonies and I'm like "THIS IS PERFECT CRACK MATERIAL. THE FIRST CRACK THIS AMERICAN HISTORY CLASS HAS GIVEN ME ALL YEAR. SWEET." I don't own Hetalia. The year was 1763. England and France had been fighting for 9 years with their colonies- "America." "Yeah?" America handed off a gun with a price tag attached to it to a grinning French soldier. "Why are you trading…
English 101 22 April 2013 The Theme of Change: Langston Hughes and Tupac Shakur The poem “Harlem” by Lanston Huges and the song “Changes” by Tupac Shakur share common themes. Langston’s “Harlem” emphasizes the importance of his dreams that, over time, end up passing unnoticed. Shakur’s “Changes” displays frustration in a lifestyle he feels is partially shaped by racial stereotypes and how that lifestyle could change if long held racial prejudices were reexamined. Both pieces share similar ideas…
kitchen always turns into a mess, and the toast is always burned. She does not sound like much of a mother, but the love she has for Slater is unending. Her love is shown when she lets Nigel help her make the ever-so-famous Christmas pies. The crispy, sweet pies that brings the entire family together as a whole. When Nigel and her enjoy the sound of cupcake batter slowing hitting the cookie sheets together is just another example of the abundance of love she has for him. Slater may have been saddened…
one can be. I say this because I work at Little Angels a home for people with mental disabilities and there is more drama in that “loving home” than anywhere else I’ve worked. Some people like to talk about others behind their back and others are sweet as pie. Race or education does not make a person act the way they act. You would think a person with an education would act like he/she knows everything or that a poor person steals everything they see but that’s just stereotypes. I believe that a…
Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried is a collection of essays, all centered on anecdotes of American soldiers during the Vietnam War. The seemingly straightforward recollections slowly reveal dense layers of personal and metaphorical meanings upon closer inspection, with the exploration of the characters’ emotions and the underlying motif of love creating the opportunity to trace how war changes a person in the realm of his emotions. The Vietnam warfare acts as a catalyst for all of the unsettling…
