On October 29, 2012, Long Island was hit with the sucker punch that still takes it's toll on us today: Super Storm Sandy. Sandy started off as a hurricane, but weakened significantly over time. According to NASA, a hurricane develops when Air from surrounding areas with higher air pressure pushes in to the low pressure area. Then that air becomes warm and moist and rises. As the warm air continues to rise, the surrounding air swirls in to take its place. As the warmed, moist air rises and cools off, the water in the air forms clouds. The whole system of clouds and wind spins and grows, fed by the ocean's heat and water evaporating from the surface (Nasa.gov). Sandy became a super storm when it moved north, getting it's power from air pressure differentials rather than heat from water. This weakened it to make it a super storm, also not meeting the exact requirements for a hurricane (Foxnews.com).

Super Storm sandy devastated the eastern seaboard with winds up to 74-mph, blackouts and extreme flooding. Areas of Long Island remained without power until
