My Personal Leadership Style

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to clearly explain my personal leadership style. My leadership style will be described by using concepts such as emotional intelligence, transformational leadership style, and servant leadership. Taking the class Leadership Styles and Development has allowed me to understand concepts of leaderships which describe me as an evolving leader. By defining, examining, discussing, describing, and analyzing these concepts, they will show how I will continue to transform into a leader I will be satisfied.
Introduction
One of Northouse description of leadership is defined as a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal (Northouse, 2012. p. 5). In the many approaches understood throughout MSOL: Leadership styles and Development, best gives leadership a well thought out explanations. One would be able to define and describe where their personal leadership styles fits into one or more approaches. Realizing that a personal leadership style can be infused among several theories, concepts and practices, one could afford to describe a person’s leadership style more clearly. As a leader transforms due to their experiences from a variety of situations and work environments, you are able to evolve into the leader you desire. Research now brings those experiences and situations into terms within the field of leadership theory and concepts. This paper will describe the evolution of leadership through my working experiences and how that has describes my leadership style. Through emotional intelligence to transformational leadership, the paper will show that my leadership style touched those concepts and theories. Concepts and theory of leadership will be explained as it relates to my personal experiences. Ultimately, it will show how my leadership style continues to be enhanced as my professional career continues to be cultivated as I am successful.
Emotion and Leadership defined Northouse (2012) express the component common to nearly all classifications is that leadership is an influence process that assists groups of individuals toward goal attainment. Influences whether it’s a personal or professional can explain why leadership is vital for the attainment of goals. The start of the leadership experience is being perceived during the time the leader emerges within the organization. Leaders, such as those places in an organization’s position like shift leader, project manager, or plant supervisor are those who are promoted and become leaders. Northouse (2012) defines that, “Leadership that is based on occupying a position in an organization is assigned leadership.” Often times those who are assigned to be in these position is not the perceived leader of the group. As a resident director while completing my undergraduate degree at Indiana University, the staff perceived me as the leader of the staff while they sought advice even though I was not the coordinator of the residence hall. Northouse (2012) advises, “When others perceive an individual as the most influential member of a group or an organization, regardless of the individual’s title, the person is exhibiting emergent leadership”. Michael Kipp (1999) implies, “More often than we’d like to admit, leadership occurs quite by accident”. In my experience the early opportunities to show my leadership skills came from observation from others when given the chance to lead in projects and other responsibilities within my career. As a program director for the YMCA, one would have several objectives to accomplish that affects the people you supervise. Program directors were always faced with results in number and activities throughout your perspective departments.
