External Influences (that may impact you and your relation to HR): Econonmic Conditions

-employment levels – ex) a lot of jobs available must compel current employees to stay.

- productivity levels – ex) higher degrees of productivity in another country so why have the work here?

- growth of the primary, secondary, and tertiary (service) sectors – ex) if you want to keep someone in a service job, you have to pay them differently depending on where they are.

- increasing workforce diversity: visible and ethnic minorities; women; Aboriginal population; people with disabilities

-generational differences: -Traditionalists (pre 1946) 75 million US - Baby Boomers (1946 to 1964) 80 million US - Gen X (1965 to 1980) 46 million US - Gen Y/ Millenials (1981 to present) 76 million US

-4 Generations are working together
-People are at the heart of what we do
-The gap is widening
-Different values, cultures, etc.

-Different people, different views on ‘good’ and ‘bad’, ‘right’ and ‘wrong’

when Bill Irwin was an undergrad there was no social stigma on drinking and driving, now obviously there is

opposite for same sex relationships

shift in values- what kinds of conflicts can arise from that?

Traditionalists: still in work force mostly very senior experienced WW2 loyal top down approach influenced by Joe Dimaggio don’t like change want to build a legacy

Baby Boomers
TV generation suburbia drugs and rock and roll competitive “me” generation sense of entitlement want to build a stellar career

Gen X key word: scepticism
MTV
distrustful of institutions need balance between work and life

Gen Y millenials are not as sceptical about future as gen x; happier most ethnically diverse in history perceive themselves as special and highly expectant civic generation- coming of age is good and empowering told all our lives we are special sheltered follow rules expectation for structure decision challenged confident expect good new; encouraged to believe in themselves
-believe in community service(as long as they get credit for it)
-have mastered the art of negotiating levels of acceptable
-conventional
- accept social rules/normas -respect cultural differemces - have come to accept codes of conduct and dress - feeling the best way to get along is to go along -movement back to political “middle of the road”
-team oriented -desire to cooperate and be perceived as cooperative
-achieving
-expect and need to achieve -have respect for “heroes” created by media
-pressured
-respect for conformity -“its okay as long as I don’t get caught” – blurred ethics of the overly ambitious

what may appeal to one group may not appeal to another

if these groups slim down from 20 year blocks to about 10 year blocks it would become more complex

younger people much more willing to try new things

Traditionalists “Build a legacy” satisfied with a job well done
Baby Boomers “Build a stellar career” money title recognition
Gen X “build a portable career” freedom
Millenials “build a parallel career”

Milleium student
-characteristics are a mixed bag
-tend to follow rules as long as they are enforced and explained clearly
-the need for competent practice to meet students aspirations…

Labour market issues -higher overall level of education, however higher level of functional illiteracy
-increased non standard or contingent workers -part time - term/temporary/standby -home -self employed

external influences: Technology
-new technologies: twitter, facebook, videoconferencing
-concerns over data control, accuracy, right to privacy, and ethics
-computerized monitoring of email, voice mail,
