Assignment # 1

The culture I chose to study was Brazil. Culture can be defined as the quality in a person or society that arises from a concern for what some may require as excellent. In other words, what a society finds valuable. The behaviors and beliefs of a social ethnic group may contribute to the culture. Brazil is a captivating country with a rich diverse back ground. The native language spoken in Brazil is Portuguese. The traditions and customs, music, arts, cuisine, and literature are also of Portuguese.

The country has a large impressive religious following with 90% of it’s population is involved in some kind of religious practices, making Brazil more religiously inclined than any other South American country. However, 1% of Brazil does not believe in God or a higher being of power. 3/4 of the population being Roman Catholic, more Catholics are in Brazil than in any other country in the world.

The Catholic religion was introduced durning the time of the European settlers. They arrived in Brazil, (civilizing) the native people. They built churches and brought religious leaders into Brazil to teach the young children and adults the Catholic religion. The Catholic priest are paid a salary by the Brazilian government. The priest are also a part of the political arena of the country.

Brazil is South America largest country in geography and population. The fascinating parts of Brazil are Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo,
