Stem Cell Research What are stem cells and why are they so important? Stem Cells are cells with the ability to divide for indefinite periods in culture and to give rise to specialized cells. Stem Cells can be found in the brain, heart, skin, organs and spine. There are two types of stem cells, adult stem cells and embryonic stem cells. Stem Cell research is exceedingly useful in our society because it can help cure many diseases and help the injured. Stem cell research can contribute to curing diseases and helping the handicapped. Stem cell lines which are a group of identical pluripotent stem cells that can be grown and multiplied in a lab dish can be used to help treat Parkinson's disease Alzheimer and cancer. The kind experimental way sets them cells are being used to treat different diseases and injuries degree going to skin and growing organs in the lab. The type of human tissues organs and other cells that have been grown from human stem cells are blood cells, brain cells, liver cells, muscle cells, and spinal cells.
Embryonic and adult stem cells are useful to Stem Cell Research. The difference between adult stem cells and embryonic stem cells, embryonic stem cells can be grown easily in a lab which adult stem cells cannot be as easily grown. In the ways that embryonic stem cells can be used better than adults themselves arm because they're capable of almost unlimited division, can be grown easily and can be grown into all types of cells. The only way adults stem cells can be better in the use of embryonic stem cell is the adult stem cells have a lower chance of being rejected by the immune system.
Stem cell research need to harvest stem cells and embryonic and adult stem cells are harvested in different ways. The way to harvest embryonic stem cell is from removing the nucleus from a donor egg. Then it is fertilized in a coaster culture dish and grows with and its own DNA and is used for research. The way to harvest adult stem cells is to do the bone marrow. A person will be given an epidural and then the doctor makes several small punctures in the skin of both the pelvic bone. A special needle is attached to a syringe which is inserted through the pierces into the bone marrow. The doctor draws bone morrow and blood out of the bone until there is enough stem cells is collected. The process of using stem cells to treat specific diseases are the stem cells must be stem cell lines, the scientist must be able to turn the stem cells genes into any so they wish to use the cells for what it was meant to do. Thus, embryonic and adult stem cells are helpful to stem cell
