Have you ever experienced Starbuck’s famous pumpkin spice latte? Most people that have love it. Many people try Starbucks once, and then they are addicted to it. People love how they have a variety of hot drinks, cold drinks and food products. The company of Starbucks has been open for a long time, they have a very specific business plan, and they sell a variety of products. Do you have any idea when the first Starbucks store opened? If you not, you will learn about their opening when you read on. The first Starbucks opened at Pikes Peak Place, in Seattle Washington, in 1971. The first three people in the Starbucks business were Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegel, and Gordon Bowker. Starbucks got its name from a character in Moby Dick. If you have not noticed before, Starbucks has a very unique logo, and the original logo was designed by a friend of the three men in the Starbucks business. The original Starbucks was inspired by Alfred Peet, who was a Dutch immigrant. Alfred also had a store called Peet’s Coffee and Tea, in California. The first Starbucks was not like the ones we have today, they did not have fresh brewed coffee in the store, and instead they only sold the coffee beans. After they got the first store opened and running in 1971, they opened a second store in 1972; by 1980 they had opened 4 stores. Once they have a company going, they needed to come up with a mission statement and a way that these three men would run the company. Starbucks mission statement is very simple, it is to “Inspire and nurture the human spirit, one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time.” There are six ways that Starbucks carries out their mission statement; they are coffee, partners, customers, stores, neighborhood, and shareholders. For coffee, they try to have high quality and good care for it. Employees, also called partners, are very diverse, able to be them self, and shown respect and dignity. Starbucks tries to make their stores a fun place to be. They do this by making it a place with no worries, a place to meet your friends, and a place to just have a good time! They try to put their stores in good neighborhoods that are positive, part of a good community, and where they can have the opportunity to bring people closer. Starbucks is a very successful company, and they try to reward all their shareholders who are accountable for some of the great successes Starbucks has had. As you can see, employees are a big part of Starbucks so I will tell you more about them in the next paragraph. Without good employees, a company cannot function. Starbucks has great employees and they have been recognized for it in Fortune Magazine’s list of the top 100 companies to work for. The employees are called partners, and they need to be fun and respectful. Starbucks employees receive many benefits. They receive many types of insurance plans, such as medical, prescription, drug, dental, vision, life and disability. They also get one pound of delicious Starbucks coffee every week! One reason people love working for Starbucks is because they offer very flexible work hours, which are great for people going to school or that have a family. Most workers get about $7.50- $10.00 an hour, which is good pay. The best part about working at Starbucks is being able to work at a place where the people are always positive. With having good employees, it has allowed Starbucks to grow and be and international company. Starbucks is not only located in the United States, but in many other countries also. The first one to open outside of North America was opened in Tokyo in 1996. Today Starbucks is in 50
