Chapter 10 Assessment Three important variables that have a big role in the game of basketball would be the winning percentage, turnovers, and fouls per game. The winning percentage is the response variable, which is plotted on the horizontal axis (x-axis), and turnovers and fouls per game would be the explanatory variable, which is plotted on the horizontal axis (y-axis). These variables were chosen because during basketball games, turnovers and fouls happen a lot, so it is expected that a lot of statistics would be available for those two variables. The question of interest is to see which of the two explanatory variables has a stronger association with the response variable. The following two scatter plots shows the relationships between the winning percentage and turnovers per game, and between the winning percentage and fouls per game. This data was collected from http://www.ncaa.com/stats/basketball-men and represents the variables per game for the 2010-2011 NCAA seasons.

Based on the scatterplot and the correlation, which is r = 0.0095, there seems to be a weak, positive, linear association between fouls and winning percentages during a NCAA regular season. The correlation for the association between the turnovers and winning percentage is r = 0.24.
