The sports participation pyramid
Foundation
This is the largest part of the sports participation pyramid. It usually consists of beginners and primary school students. The idea of this triangle is to teach the beginners basic skills. For example throwing and catching balls in cricket. This level of the pyramid usually focuses on the fun aspect of all sports, they do this because they want the participants to enjoy the sport and hopefully improve their skills to carry on in the future.
Participant
This is the next stage of the pyramid and this is where the participants will learn the laws and regulations of the sport. It tries to get different people of different ages more involved within sport and to play a regular amount of sport per week.
Performance
This stage focuses on more on improving the performance level of each participant. They do this by practising/training and getting involved in competition to test the abilities against others. This level consists of academies and sponsorships so it's really hard to get into and involves a high amount of skill to get into. People in this stage need to be motivated to get to the next level because they are nearly at the top. At this stage both the coaches and participants need to have learned all aspects of the sport. For example the health and safety side and the technical side of the sport.
Elite
This is the most unpopular level of the triangle as only a handful of athletes reach the elite stage. This is where athletes will be competing in national and worldwide competition(s), such as champion’s league and world cup. In this stage, it is where participants have one on one time with their coaches so that they can become the best they can possibly be. It also involves lots of mental preparation just as much as the physical of the sport.
Swimming
Foundation
At foundation level, it involves swimming lessons which teach the basic principles to youngsters. At this stage also there is nothing that is being taught that is too extreme for the begineers. The things that they will be learning are things like kicking at the side of the pool and doggy paddle. Also at this level it will be more fun for the participants so that the youngsters are having fun and being confident in the water.
Participation
At this stage, there are no age restrictions which allows anyone to be invoived. Within swimming this is where the main lessons will take place, earniong their dolphin awards. The dolphin awards allow participants to further their education and further their skills within the sport. The dolphin awards will also get the performer to do strokes correctly, but maybe not at the best technique.
Perfromance
This is the stage where the swimmers will go into a group to then get coached to improve their technique. For example, the "City of Leeds Swimming Club" has coaches which will work with the performers needs and then further their skills. Working on these skills will then make the performers gain swimming speed and be ready for events such as competitions. The performer will then have to know about tactical ideas for the race as this level of competition will be of high standard.
Elite
This is the highest level for swimming as it will involve training up to 10 times per week It is also where you will have your own coach and this will mean more one to one time to work on techniques that arent fully perfect. Also at this level you will be swimming for your county and country and even for your Olympic team.
Football

In the foundation period of getting into sport, in this case football it is more introducing them to what the sport is about. The foundation level is mainly aimed at younger people; it aims to get the kids of the streets and to take part in something
