Mr. Fliegel Speak Summary/Reflection In Speak, third marking period, the book starts out with Heather “dumping” Melinda. . At lunch, Heather tells Melinda that she no longer wants to be friends, despite the fact that Melinda was the first person Heather really talked to at Merry Weather High. Heather justifies herself by telling Melinda, “You don’t like anything. You are the most depressed person I’ve ever met, and excuse me for saying this, but you are no fun to be around and I think you need professional help.” However, the way Heather acts shows that there are several more reasons for her essentially abandoning Melinda. Heather finds it extremely important to belong to a social clique, and because Melinda is such an outcast, Heather feels as if she is dragging her away from joining the Martha’s. On Valentine's Day there's an envelope on Melinda's locker. She's sure it's a joke, but is excited by the idea that it might be for real. Maybe, it's from David Petrakis. She goes to biology class in suspense. David is nice to her, so maybe it is from him. She opens it up and finds a "sorry" note from Heather and the friendship necklace she gave Heather for Christmas. Melinda keeps skipping school, she has to have a meeting with the guidance counselor, the principal, and her parents. She skips school some more, only to find herself in in-school suspension. Andy Evans is in there too. So, she stops skipping school to avoid being trapped with him. I think Heather was a real jerk to Melinda. Melinda was the only person who talked to her and now she is just treating Melinda like a doll she can pick up and throw around whenever she wants to. She knows Melinda needs somebody and she abandoned her for her own personal necessities. Heather is really selfish. On the other
