“Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me: I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” (Lazarus and Hollander ) These are the words engraved on the Statue of Liberty written by a Jewish American poet Emma Lazarus. This statement set the tone of what the United States of America was founded for. It invites the worlds down trotted and unwanted to come and live free in the United States. This sonnet failed to mention that after the country becomes one of the most powerful countries the “poor” and “tired” invitations are void. Also, Lazarus’ poem forgot to tell the world how hard it would be to get it to use this invitation into the United States.
The process I’m explaining is Immigration. The propose of immigration is that to regulate the amount or non-citizens that come in to a country. It also, makes it fair for the taxpayers and helps the control resources in a country. Although it is very important to maintain a consistent number of Americans, our great country also has a way for foreigners to become a lawful member of it.
The immigration process isn’t as easy as just walking into a country and starting a life. Its much more it evolves a long Drawn out course that puts applicants through tests of history, literacy, memory, extensive background checks and if you get through that then you have to pay a large fee. And only then you can legally become a citizen of the United States.
