In this essay I’m going to be looking at how the Spanish civil war and its result of the nationalist or fascist side winning the war, affected the republican population or any other type of opposition. The Spanish Civil War (1936-39), was a military revolt against the Republican government of Spain, supported by conservative elements within the country. When an initial military coup failed to win control of the entire country, a bloody civil war ensued, fought with great ferocity on both sides. The Nationalists, as the rebels were called, received aid from Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. The Republicans received aid from the Soviet Union, as well as from International Brigades, a great number of volunteers who came from other European countries and the United States.
The war was an outcome of a polarization of Spanish life and politics that had developed over previous decades. On one side were most of the Roman Catholic Church in Spain, important elements of the military, most landowners, and many businessmen. On the other side were urban workers, most agricultural laborers, and many of the educated middle classes. There was also a great number of social group that systematically were seen as an opposition to the regime like social thinkers, homosexual, or writers that were sent to jail or shot by the army. Spain became a dangerous place for many people which only way of surviving was to flee from to country to France the closest nation to Spain.
The first migratory movements began in 1936 just at the start of the war due to the violence inflicted by the fascist army. The groups mainly came from the north due to the proximity with the boarder, this migrations were only provisional since many had the idea of returning once the war had ended. As the conflict unfolded the provisional nature of the migrations became more permanent and greater from the Republican side. The migrations were so large that the Republican government tried to help with the movements of people to the Mediterranean coast just before the Nationalist army reached Madrid. Due to this the office of migration and help to the refugee was created by the Republicans in Spain and also in France, Paris. The first evacuations made by these offices were of a hundred kids to the U.S.S.R followed by four-hundred and fifty people from el Pais Vasco to the French island of Oleron. Data also points that more than ten thousand persons fled the country walking through the roads that led to France under really bad conditions.
