OPTIONAL BOOK: 1) Pocket Guide to APA Style, Perrin, third edition (updated version) (ISBN 13-978-0-495-91142-5) COURSE DESCRIPTION: Introduces concepts and methods of sociology including investigation of socialization, group processes, social inequality, social institutions, and social change. Lecture: 3 credits (45 contact hours).

STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITIES: It is very important for you to attend class regularly, complete the assigned readings and any additional assignments prior to the class session, and take quizzes and exams as scheduled. Qualitative student participation in class discussions is encouraged. If any student has difficulty in understanding any aspect of this course, please see your professor early in the semester. Completion of any written work, including any essay questions on exams, is mandatory in this course to satisfy the written requirement for all transfer courses under the rules of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System. Failure to write in this course will result in failure in the entire course.

COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1) Describe the three major Sociological paradigms 2) Explain each paradigm’s interpretation of the major American social institutions and human social behavior. 3) Discuss the meaning and importance of the sociological concepts of socialization, group processes, deviance, social institutions and social change. 4) To create good study habits and learn to think critically. ATTENDANCE POLICY: Each student is permitted to miss 20%, excused and unexcused, of the total number of scheduled classes. There are 16 weeks, 2 classes per week in this semester so you can miss 7, maximum. After these misses, you must drop the course or receive an “E” at the end of the semester. CELL PHONE AND TEXTING POLICY 1) TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE. IF YOU NEED TO HAVE IT ON BECAUSE OF AN EMERGENCY, PLEASE TELL ME BEFORE THE CLASS. 2) NO TEXTING IN CLASS. NO TEXTING IN CLASS. NO TEXTING IN CLASS- IS THAT CLEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 3) IF YOU ARE CAUGHT TEXTING, THE PHONE WILL BE TAKEN AWAY FROM YOU AND KEPT BY THE INSTRUCTOR. 4) YOU WILL NEED TO COME TO HIS OFFICE WITH A LETTER EXPLAINING WHY YOU NEEDED TO TEXT IN CLASS. 5) IF YOU DO NOT COME WITH THE LETTER, THE PHONE IS KEPT UNTIL THE NEXT DAY. 6) IF YOU REFUSE TO ADHERE TO THIS POLICY YOU WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE THE CLASS AND MAY OR MAY NOT BE ALLOWED TO REENTER. TARDINESS POLICY THE DOOR TO THE CLASSROOM WILL REMAIN OPEN FOR 10 MINUTES PAST THE BEGINNING OF THE CLASS(ACCORDING TO MY WATCH). AT THAT TIME THE DOOR WILL BE CLOSED AND NO ADMITTANCE WILL BE PERMITTED.
SEAT ASSIGNMENT: AFTER THE LAST DAY TO ENTER A COURSE YOU ARE TO BE SEATED IN THE SAME SEAT THROUGHOUT THE SEMESTER. THIS WILL HELP ME HARASS YOU BY NAME AND GIVE YOU A SENSE OF BELONGING
