A helping profession is one that nurtures the growth of or addresses the problems of a person's physical, psychological, intellectual, emotional or spiritual well-being.
At this stage of my life Social Work is what I am most interested in practicing because it provides opportunities for me to work in many different settings with people whose problems, issues and needs are diverse. My second choice would then be guidance counseling which is the process of helping individuals discover and develop their educational, vocational, and psychological potentialities and thereby achieve an optimal level of personal happiness and social usefulness.

This can affect my work when I get cases that are similar to that particular situation. I may be biased in the way I go about dealing with the case because my feelings and thoughts about that particular situation is embedded. It is then my responsibility as a Social Worker to separate my personal feeling/ views about issues so that it doesn’t affect my work and my ability to be non-judgmental and fair.
The primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human wellbeing and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty. If I am to carry out this mission then I must do everything that is necessary of me to complete it. If that means asking for help when I am experiencing difficulties then so be it. If that includes going to group counseling sessions then let it be. A social worker is neither superman nor superwoman, they are human and being human means you will have deficiencies and you naturally lack the ability to do everything on your own. Seeking help when you need it and going to group sessions are ways of enhancing a worker’s knowledge and skill base which with greatly impact one’s efficiency and ability to be good social worker.
