I examined the reaction of college students when I chose to take my friend’s bunny out for a walk. However, in my experiment, I decided to breach this norm, and took a real situation into action. We took the bunny on a walk to the Mills courtyard around 6pm. I was nervous for my friend’s bunny because she had never walked it outside before. We placed the bunny on the ground with the lease attached and waited for the responses. Within about 5-10 minutes of us standing there about 20 students had walked over to my friend and I. There were mainly males of white decent that we noticed and the common college age range of 18-23. During the experiment, I felt so incredibly awkward and a little embarrassed. I chose this norm because I didn’t want to negatively break one. I liked seeing the positive feedback from the students that walked by me even though it was a strange situation. I felt that the students who came over made nice remarks such as “This made my day!” and “I want to get a bunny now!”. I was even talking to my friend after and she said, “I’m glad you made me do this! I liked hearing all the positive feedback, I’ll have to do this more often”. From the perspective of not having done this social experiment, I expected that it would cause some attention as well as positive feedback. I also did not find any personal difficulty with this social experiment because the norm I violated was not doing harm to another person. As observed, there were no real consequences when this norm is breached and the reactions of others resulted in mainly positive responses. In addition, this experiment was a positive sanction because the reactions that I received from the students coming over to us was an expression of approval and acceptance of the social norm.
