Out of Class Assignment 2
The following questions are based on your reading of chapter 4. After reading the chapter, consider the following questions and answer each one appropriately. As a reminder, this assignment is to be submitted through turnitin.com by 10:20 am on Wednesday, June 13.
1. Consider the area that you grew up in. Are there a lot of people in the area or is it a small community? How do you think the population helped you to find friends, activities, and interests?
I grew up in the capital city of Indonesia (Jakarta) there are lots of large community. In my opinion, the population helped us to find friends through the culture that we applied in our daily life. School also has a main role to help us to find friends, human is a social animal, and we need friends to share our stories, to learn new things and someone who always welcome to embrace us. Activities and interests also related to a culture.
2. I want you to think about your behavior in different social situations. How do you change your behavior to fit the appropriate situation? Why do we change our behaviors? What are some examples of how you behave in different situations (i.e...classroom, home, with friends, with family, etc...)?
We change our behavior because we have norms in the society, which ruled us to do good things and avoid the bad things. We learn this through our culture as well. For example, I normally don’t talk too much in class with loud voices and put my feet up on the table because I respect my teacher. In different place like home or my room, I can talk as loud as I can and put my feet on the table while I read my books. If I do that in class, every people will assume that I’m an impolite person and even though I can always do that every time, it doesn’t mean that I can do it in several places. Norms are always important to keep people from other bad perceptions.
3. When someone asks, "how are you doing", what response do you give? Is it a truthful response or a polite response? Why do you think we give these types of responses? What would happen if we always gave a truthful response rather than a polite response?
According to my culture, if someone asks me “how are you doing” I will say it with a truthful response because I assume that they do the same way too. When someone ask me “how are you” I always think that they mean it and they really put an attention on me because they respect me. However, not everyone mean it when they say it. For instance, if I’m not feeling well or sick and someone ask me how are you, I will tell them that I’m fine even though I’m not. I answer this because I want to end the conversation earlier so that I can go to take a rest. Of course it is not ignorance but more likely people do that to respect one and other.
4. Consider the definition for the term "stigma", according to your text. Why does stigma have such powerful influence in society? Have you ever been stigmatized? Have you ever stigmatized someone else?
Stigma has such powerful influence in society because every people have

Sociological theories are very useful in the study of criminal behavior because unlike psychological and biological theories they are mostly macro level theories which attempt to explain rates of crime for a group or an area rather than explaining why an individual committed a crime.
