REQUIREMENTS:
1. Quizzes: There are five quizzes in this class. Quizzes are multiple choice tests designed to see if you are keeping up with the reading and understand the major points made in class. You may drop the lowest quiz grade. Your average on these four quizzes will constitute 1/3 of your course grade.
2. Exams: There are also two exams: a mid-term and a final. Exams are composed of multiple choice, short answer, and essay questions. Each is worth 1/3 of your course grade, and each is comprehensive. That is, the mid-term covers all material discussed since the beginning of the semester, as does the final.
3. Exercises: There are a series of two exercises that that will be assigned in this class. These exercises must be at least three typed double spaced pages in length (minimum), and will focus on a major social issue. The first exercise is a project involving library research and the second is a project involving field research. The exercises will not be formally graded, but you will have an opportunity to earn extra-credit points for them (added to an exam score). More will be said later about these projects as they are assigned.
4. Class Attendance: Attendance is checked at each meeting. It is difficult to receive a passing grade in this class without regular attendance, and excessive absences (three or more ) may result in being dropped from class.
5. Classroom Behavior: Please try to arrive on time. If you are late, come in quietly and sit at the rear. You may leave the classroom before the end of the period, but please do not return to class during this period. I will make special exceptions to these rules if you have a legitimate excuse. Please try to speak to me before the occasion.
If you are being disruptive, I will notify you of your disruptive behavior and ask you to stop. If I have to ask you a second time to stop the behavior, you will be asked to leave the class for the day, and I will send an email to the Office of Student Affairs about the problem. Two or more episodes of seriously disruptive behavior (when I have had to ask you to leave the class) are grounds for being dropped from the class.
Cell phones (and all other electronic devices, with the exception of computers) are to be kept off at all times during the semester, and failure to do so will result in being asked to leave the classroom for the day. Electronic dictionaries will not be allowed to be used during quizzes and exams, though paper (non-sociological) dictionaries are permissible if first cleared by your instructor. Computers can be used during non-test class periods, but only for note taking. Any other use of a computer (net surfing, etc) will lose you the use of the computer for the rest of the semester.
6. Academic Integrity:
Cheating and plagiarism (using as one’s own ideas, writings or materials of someone else without acknowledgement or permission) can result in any one of a variety of sanctions. Such penalties may range from an adjusted grade on the particular exam, paper, project, or assignment to a failing grade in the assignment. The instructor may also summarily suspend the student for the class meeting when the infraction occurs, as well as the following class meeting. For further clarification and information on these issues, please consult with your instructor or contact the office of the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs.
7. Accommodations for Students with Disabilities:
Students with disabilities who may need accommodations in this class are encouraged to notify the instructor and contact Disabled Student Services & Programs (DSP&S) early in the
