May: The 13th Malaysian
General Elections. Ruling coalition Barisan Nasional won a simple majority with
133 of the 222 parliamentary seats. The opposition coalition, Pakatan Rakyat, won more seats in Parliament this time as well as the popular vote.

June: The new Financial
Services Act 2013 and
Islamic Financial Services
Act 2013 came into force to govern local financial institutions. Snapshot of major events in 2013

July: KLCI breaches the
1,800 level for the first time, recording a new high of 1,810 points

July: Fitch Ratings cuts
Malaysia’s sovereign credit outlook to negative from stable, citing weaker prospects for budgetary and fiscal reforms, KLCI loses
1.3%. Prices of RON95 petrol and diesel goes up by 20 sen a liter. Bid by government to address concerns of country’s growing deficit.

July: Sex blogger couple Alvivi face trial over their Ramadan prank . The High Court denied their stay application against the proceedings in the lower court.

2012, which showed a continued wastage in government spending.

Introduction of the Goods and Services Tax - set to be introduced from 1 April 2015 at a rate of 6% - abolition of sugar subsidy and higher property taxes were the highlights. Oct: Malaysia moved into top
10 of World Bank Ease of doing business ranking
(from earlier 12th position to
6th in 2013)..
