The movie is “Sixteen Candles”. This movie is literally brimming with, at the very least, somewhat fractured interpersonal relationships. The two relationships that will be dissected are that of Samantha Baker (Molly Ringwald) and Farmer Ted “The Geek” (Anthony Michael Hall), and later, Jake Ryan (Michael Schoeffling) and his steady girlfriend Caroline Mulford (Haviland Morris). These relationships were chosen because they have both positive and negative features, and there was plenty of on-screen interaction to be able to come to relationship conclusions. The relationship between Samantha (Sam) and Farmer Ted (known as The Geek, Farmer Ted, or just Ted) went through a series of phases. It started out very volatile, and quite hostile. Sam was not interested in Ted even as a person, much less a friend or romantic partner, which was Ted's desire. By watching Sam's non-verbal, physical reaction to Ted, it was clear that she was genuinely repulsed by his very presence. She recoiled in disgust from him and followed that message with very insulting and hurtful words.
