Freud’s Contributions Sigmund Freud explored the human mind more thoroughly than any other who became before him. He was a Viennese doctor who specialized in neurological disorders and realized that symptoms which had no organic or bodily basis could develop into a real neurological discord. His contributions to psychology are vast. Freud was one of the most influential people of the twentieth century and his enduring legacy has influenced not only psychology, but art, literature and even the way people bring up their children. Freud was the founding father of psychoanalysis, a method for treating mental illness and also a theory which explains human behavior. Freud was probably the smartest guys when it came to psychology in his time. His deep thought out theories were based on the mind. He thought that somehow most things people could remember when they see a person, came from pasted childhood experiences. It seemed that sometimes he was just implanted stuff in peoples mind to make them react in the way he wanted them to. Another contribution to Psychology was Freud’s psychoanalytic techniques. Freud’s psychoanalysis had several features that are still used in clinical practices today. For example the use of a relaxing atmosphere were patients lay on a couch and the lights are dimmed, this allows for total relaxation to the point where the unconscious may begin to emerge itself.
