When a teenager is lonely and ashamed he lashes out at the people close to him. Shame can lead to confrontations, which can lead to violence. In Sherman Alexie’s Flight the main character Zits has been in and out of twenty foster homes. In a later scene Zits spirit walks into a little Indian boy’s body at the Little battle of bighorn where he discovers he has a father and a family. Zits is happy for the first time in his life. Alexie shows how kids need a family to love and to care about. Through Zits Alexie shows how kids who grow up without parents struggle to have long lasting relationships.

In a later scene Zits spirit walks into a little indian boys body and finds out that he has a family of his own that loves him. In this scene Alexie writes, “I wonder if this is Heaven. Maybe God sent me to hell first. Maybe he made me watch Art kill Junior because I needed to learn from my mistakes. Maybe I learned something. Maybe God forgave me and sent me to Heaven. Maybe this indian camp is Heaven.” Zits is calling this indian camp Heaven because this is the only place that made Zits happy. Zits says “I have a family. A real family. A true family. I am happy for the first time in my life.”(65)

Clearly, Zits needs a family to make him happy so that he can have a longlasting relationship with people whom he loves and cares about. Alexie shows how shame, loneliness, and fear can change a person’s life. Shame can either make you a better person or can just destroy your life.
