As the expectations of what is ethical and acceptable in the workplace and the ever changing rules of human behavior are outlined in company training books, all employees face the challenges of avoiding one of the most scandalous aspects of harassment in the workplace, sexual harassment. Sexual harrasment is a form of misconduct that undermines the honesty of the employment relationship. All employees have the right to work in an environment free from all forms of discrimination and conduct which can be considered harassing, coercive, or disruptive, including sexual harassment. Sexual harassment is a form of discrimination, in the United States, that violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Sexual harassment occurs when one employee makes continued, unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature, to another employee, against his or her wishes. People struggle to accept the new rules of behavior that companies outline and enforce many ethical issues are raised. The fact that what may have been acceptable twenty years ago may not be acceptable today influences the challenges faced by managers who work with an older workforce. As our workforce has greatly changed with an increase in the number of women and minorities working and a wider range of age groups with different ideas of what is proper behavior at work. When companies seek to create an environment of non-offensive behavior in the workplace in every situation, managers can face great difficulties in placing blame and instituting fair discipline consequences. As the very complex issues of sexual harassment and its serious consequences for employees and the company have become clearer, a number of corporations have hired specialized counsel to train managers and develop specific policies and prevention programs.
