SCID is an inherited immune disorder caused by a mutation in a gene. In most cases, it is unknown why the mutation occurs. Your genes carry an inherited genetic code that instructs the body how to create cells and protein in your body. There are five known types of SCID--all forms of the disease are inherited. Approximately one in every million people have SCID. A number of genetic abnormalities can cause SCID; however, most of the cases are linked to the X chromosome passed by the mother. Because SCID all but knocks out a child’s immune system – the body’s built-in defense against infection – children with SCID are at high risk of developing conditions like:

-meningitis
-chronic diarrhea
-ear infections
-thrush infections
