1. What are some interesting facts and statistics about the mental illness?

• People with Schizophrenia are averagely LESS violent than the general population. In reality they are usually anxious, fearful of others, and passive.
• Hospital admission is often not needed and many people with schizophrenia live a stable life, work, and have relationships.
• Schizophrenia Ranks among the top 10 causes of disability in developed countries worldwide

2. Describe briefly a case study. My case study is about a 7 year old girl named Jani. Jani is diagnosed with a severe case of schizophrenia. She hallucinates about imaginary animals and children. Her parents say that they’ve heard about over 200 cats and little girls that only their daughter sees. Since childhood Jani had symptoms of schizophrenia such as reduced sleep and the flattened effect. Jani originally started showing symptoms at the age of 2 but her parents thought it was just a normal thing kids do when she would introduce her imaginary friends. It was when she turned 5 that they knew something was wrong. She became very abusive and was constantly hurting herself claiming that her cat named “Wednesday” was doing that. When it got severe is when she got hospitalized and was diagnosed. Jani is on medication right now and doctors are trying to control her violent impulses

Schizophrenia is often described in terms of positive and negative symptoms. Positive symptoms are those that most individuals do not normally experience but are present in people with schizophrenia. These symptoms also respond well to medication. Negative symptoms, on the other hand, refer to the absence of characteristics of normal function.
