Sacrifice is an action that few people consider because the trade-offs usually lead to unhappiness. It takes a great deal of love for another person in order to understand what sacrifice means. People are motivated to help others by empathy, not reason or numbers. “If you really want to stay alive, you get people to like you,” says their drunken, traumatized mentor, Haymitch. It’s the first advice he gives to the heroes, Katniss and Peeta, and a surprising amount of the film’s action revolves around their efforts to win people’s sympathy, which results in “sponsorships” that help them in their most desperate moments. Stoicism is an ancient philosophy of withholding emotion for the sake of inner strength. In Roman times, stoicism meant, in a larger sense, the willingness to lose everything. One of Katniss's strengths is her stoicisim, which she describes as her "indifferent mask." Because of the pressure to provide for her family, she has learned to stay focused on survival at the expense of her emotions, so much so that she doesn't realize how deeply she feels for Gale. Through the novel, her stoic determination proves a great asset towards succeeding at the Games, but it also masks her deep empathetic feelings for other people. Part of her journey is learning to accept her emotional side in addition to her stoicism. In the fictional novel The Hunger Games, Selected teenagers are forced to fight for their lives in an arena when an entire nation watches on. Leaders from the capitol who are in power use this tactic to dehumanized the people from the other districts. The concept of dehumanization has applied to various religions, races, and nationalities throughout history. Jews have been persecuted throughout history. They were first enslaved during biblical times then during the Second World War they were sent to death camps. Dehumanization allows powerful people to make tough decisions in a more distant, cold, and rational manner (252 Haslam). In The Hunger Games the leaders from the capitol showed dehumanization on a grand scale by assigning very little value to human life. There are two types of dehumanization. The first type involves denying human attributes to another person. The second type is an everyday social phenomenon that centers on indifference or apathy (252 Haslam). The people in power take advantage of the victim this concept continues to be document in literature and the media. Martin Luther King was and American pastor, activist, and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. On August 28, 1963 in Washington D.C. 250,000 attended the civil rights demonstration. Martin Luther King stated “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal." Even in America it still seems like not everyone is treated equally when it comes to trieing to get a new job, working with people, or just going to school. In other parts of the world it is a disgrace to convert to another religion, marry the same sex, or talk to other people that are not your kind or race/ethnicity. Dehumanization is not always about hatred. Often it is more about an indifference or apathy (70 Waytz). In some ways people may not be seen as victims, but as a means to an end. The people in the capitol that were in charge used the other districts as their main means of resources. Not only did they use the districts for resources, but also for entertainment. “Look how we take your children and sacrifice them and there is nothing you can do” (19 Collins). This demonstrates that dehumanized individuals are treated as though they have no capacity for reasoning or conscious awareness. The rulers of the capitol throw the citizens lack of control in their face and do not care about how it affects individual families.
