ALEPPO, Syria — A shadowy jihadist organization that first surfaced on the Internet to assert responsibility for suicide bombings in Aleppo and Damascus has stepped out of the shadows and onto the front lines of the war for Syria’s cities.
Here in Aleppo, the al-Nusra Front for the Protection of the People of the Levant, widely known as the Jabhat al-Nusra, is fielding scores of fighters, some of them foreigners, in the battle for control of Syria’s commercial capital, a key prize in the bitter war of attrition being waged across the country.

While Assad has been brutal in fighting the rebellion, actually most of the atrocities in Syria are being committed by the so-called rebels, many of whom are foreigner mercenaries. As reported in the Washington Post, even "groups suspected of al-Qaeda links [are] gaining prominence in war to topple Assad." In fact, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper testifies before the Senate Armed Services Committee that
"Al-Qaeda's branch in Iraq likely carried out recent suicide bombings in Syria and has infiltrated opposition forces fighting President Bashar al-Assad's regime."
The earlier paper provided references that more than $500M was initially provided by Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States (mainly Qatar) to a previous vice president of Syria to engineer the overthrow of President Assad.
There is now further evidence that Turkey is providing military training to Syrian rebels. One rebel fighter said, "The Turkish people are really helping us. Lots of people are getting training in those camps."
The Telegraph interviewed two journalists who were kidnapped and released later by the Syrian rebels. They indicated that "British citizens are among Islamist fighters and the camp members reportedly included people from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Chechnya, with no Syrians present."
As reported in Reuters, "President Barack Obama
was a massive upheaval for the people of Russia, especially in Petrograd. For years tension had been brewing due to the effects of many different aspects of life in Russia, like the personality of the Tsar and the inconsistency of the Duma. There was also the impact of the years of 1906-1914, and also, maybe most importantly the effects of World War One on Russia. All this led to what is widely referred to as a revolution, but how far should the First World War be responsible for the downfall of the…
is because the provisional government kept Russia in World War I. Opposition to the war was very strong in Russia, and was what drove Nicholas to abdicate. By staying in the war, the provisional government insured that it would never gain widespread support, and gave the Bolsheviks the opportunity to undermine it. As far as why most people think there was only one, people tend to focus on the end result, and the end result of the events of 1917 in Russia was that the Bolsheviks were in control. The…
1. Austria-Hungary and Serbian tension increased and eventually escalated to war. While I do forget who declared war first, Serbian ally Russia declared war in turn on Austria while Germany, allied with Austria, declared war on Russia. In turn France declared war on Germany because of its alliance with Russia and Britain followed suit. In essence, the ONLY reason there was a World War was because of these alliances. Nationalism - made the whole of Germany want to unite creating it one big…
Leading up to World War I, there was a great deal of tension in Europe. One of the most explosive moments before the war arrived when Slavs wanted to break away from Austria to join the unified Slavic nation of Serbia, It was after the assassination of the Archduke of Austria that the terms for doing so led to a disagreement between Austria-Hungary and Serbia, which eventually led to the mobilization of allied armies on both sides. Instead of helping, the Allied Forces’ involvement only created more…
who wanted stronger ties with America - Imperialists, who wanted stronger ties with Britain Sir Wilfred Laurier Sir Wilfred Laurier was known as the Great Compromiser. Three of the biggest compromises that he made were - The Boer War. Britain is involved in a war with South Africa, and Britain asks for troops. French Canada refuses to go, while English Canada supports it. Wilfred Laurier calls for volunteers only, as his compromise. - Manitoba School Question. Manitoba was questioning whether…
Germany believed war with Russia was extremely likely. If war broke out, Germany assumed France would also attack as she was both an ally of Russia. Germany would face a war on two fronts. Germany tried to avoid this at all costs. Germany planned to defeat France, and then turn to the eastern front for a major offensive on Russia. This was the basis for the Schlieffen Plan. The plan was a surprise attack in which the Germany army would capture and obtained France before Russia was ready to fight…
World War 1 played a very significant role in the decline and collapse of the Romanov dynasty. They had been in danger of revolution before the war began, but this event was too much for the Tsar and the people of Russia to handle. Although this wasn’t the only factor that impacted on the downfall of Nicholas Tsar’s autocratic reign, he also failed to increase the support of peasants, when the Tsar was absent from Russia living conditions and supplies began to decline. He also left his wife Alexandra…
Empress Alexandra. In January of 1917 in Russia began the final dissolution of all economic and administrative bonds of the State. Only when the Imperial Duma decided to assume control, the already complete collapse of the monarchy called forth a revolution which no one had prepared or foreseen. The revolution wasn’t prepared by anyone, the Russian people suddenly itself without any sovereign power and without a government. Russia was in a middle of a war, which made the situation even worse. There…
The Russo-Japanese War (8 February 1904 – 5 September 1905) was "the first great war of the 20th century."[4] It grew out of rival imperial ambitions of the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan over Manchuria and Korea. The major theatres of operations were Southern Manchuria, specifically the area around the Liaodong Peninsula and Mukden; and the seas around Korea, Japan, and the Yellow Sea. Russia sought a warm water port[5] on the Pacific Ocean, for their navy as well as for maritime trade…
1. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia in 1914 2. The Balkans were considered the powder keg of Europe, because of the nationalistic spirit that was causing revolts and rebellion in that area, prior to WW1, where the war began.. with the assassination of Franz. 3. Germany and Great Britain were in competition for industrial dominance 4. Out of fear of Germany. Russia, France, and Britain formed the triple entente. 5. The spark that started the war was because- the assassination…
