A. Nursing-Sensitive Indicators
Nursing-sensitive indicators reflect the structure, process and outcomes of nursing care. The structure of nursing care is indicated by the supply of nursing staff, the skill level of the nursing staff, and the education/certification of nursing staff. Process indicators measure aspects of nursing care such as assessment, intervention, and RN job satisfaction. Patient outcomes that are determined to be nursing sensitive are those that improve if there is a greater quantity or quality of nursing care (e.g.,

Data is collected on a daily basis in most hospitals to assess the quality of care being given to the patients. Some of the nursing quality indicators that many hospitals collect data on are prevalence of catheter associated urinary tract infections, pressure ulcers, deep vein thrombosis, and length of stay just to name a few. Without the data the institution and nursing staff would not know where their quality of nursing care is lacking. Once the data is collected and analyzed the nursing leadership as well as staff nurses can begin to develop and implement new action plans to improve the quality of care provided to the patient. The quality of nursing care given to Mr. J could have been much better if the nursing staff would have been more focused on some of the basic nursing sensitive indicators like restraint prevalence, pressure ulcer prevention, and patient satisfaction. Obtaining data, analyzing the data, implementing a plan for improvement, and following up all lead to evidence based practice and an advance in quality patient care.
