The New Deal

1.Reform Roosevelt was determined to get message to his people. He was the first president to put the radio to use. “ Much of Roosevelt’s early success was a result of his ebullient personality.”1 This is one of the ways he got the people to like him and be on his side. “He was the first president to make regular use of the radio; and his friendly fireside chats, during which he explained in simple terms his programs and plans to the people, helped build confidence in the administration. But Roosevelt could not rely on image alone.”2 “On March 6, two days after taking office, he issued a proclamation closing all Americans banks for four days until Congress could meet in special session to consider banking reform legislation.”3

2. Entertainment

“Franklin D. Roosevelt was the first American President to master the use of radio. “Beginning in the first days in office, he regularly by passed the newspapers and communicated directly with the people through his famous fireside chats.”5 “He is shown here speaking in 1938, urging communities to continue to provide work relief for the unemployed.”6 The picture shows President Roosevelt and how important his message was and wanted everyone to have a chance to hear it. In front of him you see several microphones for his being interviewed by many people so his message could go far. This showed that this president was very considerate and really cared about the people and wanted better for them.

Gospel Commentary:

“Balancing sports, academics, and Church obligations like seminary is very challenging, but keeping up my spirituality helps me maintain a balance for my other responsibilities. My academics come before my sport and my love for the gospel and what it offers me just comes naturally. Swimming is a talent from my Heavenly Father, and I am watched by many people who know me and by many who do not. I can be an example to all of those people by not only achieving success at swimming but also by choosing Christ-like actions. There are those who look up to athletes because of their great athletic accomplishments. I also want to be known for being a righteous daughter of God.” 7

3.Work Ethic

In the 1920’s because of the serious depression many people had no jobs and had no source of compensation. But by the end of the 1930’s, the Great Depression would end. “ The Works Progress Administration, which this striking poster celebrates, was the New Deal’s most prominent experiment in work relief.”8 “ In addition to providing jobs for unemployed farmers and industrial workers, it created programs to assist writers, artist writers, artist, actors, and others.” Roosevelt was dedicated to the life of the nation he wanted to help the people. His administration constructed a series of programs that fundamentally altered the federal government and its
