Computer Love
Finding love is never easy, and the dating process can often be a lonely, frustrating experience full of rejection and uncertainty. Technology has tried to make the process as painless as possible with online dating, which lets people search for romance from the comfort of there own home. Of course, no system is perfect, and dating online also has its potential pitfalls. Although online dating has many potholes on the road to a successful love life, people that do find it through this process are happier in their relationships or mirage. Along with being happier in a relationship, it’s also more convenient then finding love in a traditional situation.
Relationships that have started online often have a stronger bond or marriage. John Cacioppo, a psychologist at the University of Chicago in Illinois says, “ Couples that are married that have meet online tend to be more happier in there love life. Communication plays a huge role in online dating because that’s what the main foundation of this process is based on, because dating online heavily relies on communication, couples know what they want in a partner or in a relationship right off the bat.” Recent research actually found that couples that have met online have longer and happier marriages then those found offline. A study that tracked nearly 20,000 married or committed couples that began their relationships between 2005 and 2012 finds that those who had met online reported greater relational satisfaction, and lower occurrences of divorce than those who had met offline.
While dating online helps out ones love life, it’s also a convenience to the wallet. A recent study conducted by Usatoday stated that average working American’s between the ages of 18 to 40 spend an average of 150$ a month or 1,800$ a year on dating related expenses. A family psychologist from the university of Illinois named Susan Sprecher was quoted saying “anyone who has a full time job, working 9 to 5 and also has other commitments will rarely be able to muster up enough time to do their weekly food shop, never mind going out on a night searching for someone they like enough to arrange a date.” Cost savings is one of the most appealing benefits. Real-world dates are expensive. People spend money on gas, dining, and usually on some form of entertainment, such as movies or a concert. This is money spent just to see if one likes the other person; the first date could go terribly wrong and may never see each other again. For the cost of a membership, dating websites allow people to get to know the other person online before ever meeting. There are even some free dating services, this means less wasted money and fewer failed dates, not to mention higher quality matches.
