Romeo and Juliet In the world we live in today, rebellious children are often products of strict, demanding parents. To achieve something opposite of your parent’s opinion, rebellion is always an option. Going back to past times, in William Shakespeare’s tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, this belief of revolt was also expressed through the mind of Juliet Capulet. Examining Juliet’s rejection for an ideal mate, her affection for the sun of the enemy, and the tragic events that occurred on behalf on Juliet’s approach to situations exemplifies how Juliet Capulet is a spoiled, rebellious hoyden.
The spoiled beliefs of Juliet drove her away from the idea of having the ideal husband. Paris, a fine, wealthy young man was set to tie the knot with the beautiful Juliet and was willing to provide her with his wealth. On the other hand, Juliet rejected his and her parents plan so that she can keep her idea of falling in love at first sight and continue her passion for Romeo. When asked about the idea of coming together with a man like Paris, Juliet stated, “It is an honour that I dream not of.” Juliet shows that she is not too fond upon the idea of marrying someone the caliber of Paris. Other aspect of Juliet’s well being prepared her to perform additional uncommon things.
Juliet’s rebellious self pushes her as far as falling in love with the son of the enemy. In Romeo and Juliet, the Capulets and Montagues were rival enemies of each other. Juliet Capulet, being the disloyal person she is, decides to share her passion for the young man of the foe family, Romeo Montague. “My only love sprung from my only hate!” Here, Juliet explains that the only man she loves is the only man she hates. After discovering that Romeo says he is in love with her, Juliet states, “If that thy love is honourable, Thy propose marriage.” In other words, if Romeo’s love is real, he should tie the knot with her. Believing that her parents would deny the marriage and look down upon it, Juliet establishes that she will secretly take vows to her adorer behind the backs of her family. Her passion for the rival was so abundant that even when Romeo put Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt, to death, Juliet still managed to see the beauty in him. “ O serpent heart, hid with a flowering face!” Juliet expresses how a malevolent man can be so beautiful.
