Romeo and Juliet Compare and Contrast Extra Credit The video of Romeo and Juliet, directed by Franco Zeffirelli, and the Side-By-Side book have many differences. While they have many differences they also have many similarities. There a very many differences, but I have chosen three that I think stand out and are important to notice. In Act 1, Scene 2, Romeo and Benvolio are walking down the street together carrying on a conversation when Peter, a servant from the Capulet’s, asks Romeo to read something for him. He had asked Romeo to read the names to be invited to the masquerade ball that the Capulet’s were hosting. In the book this is very detailed however in the movie, this part of the play is nowhere to be seen. Later in the play in Act 4 the end of Scene 3, Juliet is about to take the vile of sleeping poison that the Friar gave her. Before taking the vile, she pronounces a speech about what may happen and what may not happen. She second guesses herself and the Friar but she follows through with taking the vile. At the end of the speech she says “Here’s drink. I drink to thee” (4.3.58). In the book, she says the entire speech however in the movie she only says the two sentences at the end. The last difference that I thought to be important is in Act 5, Scene 3. In the book, Romeo enters the tomb, after Paris. They proceed to bicker, Romeo refuses to fight but Paris insists on fighting. They fight and Romeo kills Paris in front of Juliet’s tomb. However, in the movie, during this scene Paris is never seen, heard nor mentioned by any of the characters who take place. Despite of all the differences, there are also similarities. I chose two similarities that I think are the more important ones
