Romeo and Juliet

Some people might say that you should love with your heart and not with your eyes. In Shakespeare's case you love with your eyes as also shown in the play "Romeo and Juliet” where both lovers fall in love with each other’s beauty. In beginning of the play Romeo was in love with this young lady named Rosaline; he noticed that their love was impossible and he fell into depression that lead him to enter into the Capulet's house which is his families’ enemy. He found a girl named Juliet and with only seeing each other’s beauty they fell in love. Romeo later leaves the party after knowing that Juliet is a Capulet and returns to find Juliet's balcony. The scene is famous for its moving and vivid images, used to express love between two people of contrasting nature. In my study I will compare the language of the famous scene of Romeo and Juliet, were Romeo releases many figurative language in the balcony scene to compare Juliet to a sun, and uses personification to kill an envious moon. Shakespeare reveals the theme "Beauty can say a thousand words", since Romeo and Juliet fell in love with each other’s beauty within a few hours of knowing each other. One example of Shakespeare’s the use of metaphor to reveal the theme appears when Juliet goes outside to the balcony. Shakespeare uses a metaphor to compare Juliet to the sun and an angel. The line, “But soft! What light through yonder window breaks? It is the East, and Juliet is the sun” “She speak o speak …bright angel for thou art as glorious to the night” means that light is representing Juliet which implies the new beginning for Romeo. The light breaking through the window shows that Juliet is giving positive energy to Romeo and taking all the negativity he had about love. Shakespeare is trying to make us understand that Juliet shines, that she is the center of attention. Romeo is explaining how Juliet is beautiful like an angel and that she makes everything better. These quotes explain how Romeo only looks at Juliet’s beauty. Shakespeare’s second use of figurative language is personification and it reveals the theme when Juliet is on the balcony thinking about Romeo. “Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, who is grief, that thou, her maid, art far more fair than she.” Shakespeare uses the word “arise” since it is referring to Juliet send positivity into Romeo. Romeo wants Juliet to kill the envious moon which is Rosaline. The image conveys that Rosaline is jealous of Juliet’s because Juliet is raging with beauty. Romeo does not want Juliet to
