Romeo and Juliet
When people think about love, many people will think about the two people falling for each other, how they met each other, and how they lived the rest of their life. However, most people don’t think about the time that the two met each other, or how long it was that they were together. Romeo and Juliet is a great example for this; they met and got married and died in less than a week. But what would have been different if this love story spanned out to a month or even a year? Would this story have been any more powerful or would it have made it weaker? Because this love story had such a short time frame for when these characters connected, it made it more powerful to readers. Changing the time period these two fell in love and committed death would have made this story weaker and not as powerful.
In the beginning of Romeo and Juliet, Romeo is grieving over Rosaline, a woman who he loved but she did not love him back. That same evening Romeo goes to the Capulet party and meets Juliet whom he ends up falling madly in love with. Later that night, he sneaks into the Capulet’s walls and finds Juliet’s bedroom. They get the idea to become married despite the fact that a Montague (Romeo) and a Capulet (Juliet) are not allowed to be together. After their decision, they secretly get married the next day in church with a priest who swears to keep their secret.
After they get married, a Montague and Capulet get into a fight and both die, one by the hand of Romeo who is then banned from City of Verona. Juliet is then forced to marry a man named Paris or else her parents will abandon her. The priest decides to come up with a plan to help save Romeo and Juliet’s marriage by faking Juliet’s death with a sleeping potion. The next day, the priest writes a letter to Romeo explaining the plan with Juliet’s pretend death. However, the letter never got to him and Romeo heard of the news of Juliet’s death from a friend. Romeo ran to Juliet’s grave and drank the poison that he got from an apothecary. When Juliet awakes she sees Romeo dead and then takes his sword and kills herself with it.
If you think about the story, it only took a 3 or 4 day time period for them to meet, fall in love, get married and die. Even though the time span is very short, a lot that happens in those 3 to 4 days. Because it’s such a short story and it’s about two people falling in love, it shows how strong love is and what people are willing to do to be with the one they love.
Now thinking if this story’s time span lasted for a week, a month or a year, what would be
