In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare the characters are displayed as emotional decision makers rather than logical decision makers. During Act III many of the characters make quick decisions based on emotions without further thought to outcome or logic. Mercutio becomes angered by Tybalt and draws his sword to duel him while saying “O calm, dishonorable, vile submission! Alla staccato carries it away. Tybalt, you ratcatcher, will you walk?” (III.i.74-76). His anger led to an irrational decision, which ultimately led to his death. This conveys that emotional decision making had a negative effect. During the course of Act III the nurse visits Friar Lawrence and Romeo to tell Romeo of Juliet’s loneliness and her desire for Romeo’s comfort. Once Romeo finds out that Juliet is upset he attempts suicide in hopes to remove his name, “In what vile part of this anatomy doth this vile name lodge? Tell me, that I may sack the hateful mansion” (III.iii.115-117). If he had accomplished suicide then Juliet’s despair would have deepened further, which is the opposite of what Romeo wants, and is also an example of the negative outcome of emotional decision making. Another fine example of poor decision making due to emotions is when Lord Capulet plans for Juliet to marry Paris on the following Thursday, though it was only Monday. Capulet made this decision so quickly because he felt it would cheer up Juliet, “O’ Thursday, tell her, She shall be married to this noble earl”
