Robert Beson:
Artist:
Robert Beson is a new up and coming contemporary architect and the director of Sydney architectural group, AR-MA. Educated in the United States and Australia, Robert holds degrees in literature, classics and architecture. Although his degrees would not be the typical sort to go into the architectural line of work, he has worked as an architect in countries such as the United States, Europe and Australia as well as in a number of international practices and institutions. His work has been exhibited at the Prague Quadrennial, Venice Biennale and the Gwangju Biennial.
Artwork:
The image below shows one of Robert Beson’s more recent works. This structure is named Trifolium. It is to serve as a pavilion and provide shelter to the common person. Its current location is the Zen garden at the SCAF gallery, however the Newington College has decided to purchase the structure to add to their new (structure) art collection. The pavilion is considered by both critics and the artist himself his best work and shows his innovation and ability to be able to create such a structure of such complexity.
Audience:
The pavilion was first created for the SCAF Fugitive structures pavilion competition. Trifolium won first place and was let to be exhibited by art critics and the exhibition-goers. The structure received much praise and positive feedback from both parties. Their comments mostly align saying the structure is interactive with the interior window design, innovative with the extreme use of the material and shape and it looks very futuristic saying “ it looks like a spaceship hovering…”
World:
The Trifolium structure has no real history behind it. Its lack of historical data however does not affect the significance the artwork has made. The Trifolium pavilion had used the one of the largest known custom 3D-printers to construct it’s parts, each part itself is unique and requires exact location and it’s use of corian (used for kitchen tops) that stretched the use of the material to it’s max (and unknown) potential.
