Road Safety
Learn how to be safe when dealing with roads (risk)
By Humza Hossain
Road safety for children
Every year over 130 children die from road
accidents(UK)
More than double those die that in car
crashes(UK)
Children need to learn to use the roads safely, to
walk and cycle in safety, and also to use their common sense when crossing a road or getting into a car. Road safety is essential for children's freedom, development and exercise and of course the roads need to be used with respect, giving more of an environmental feel.
Why have I chosen Road
Accidents?
Roads accidents account for a large number of deaths and injuries each year. In 2011, 2412 children under the age of
16 had serious injuries.
There are far too many children getting injured, by just a simple easy thing, like crossing a road. However, children don’t make it easy for themselves, mainly because they are

Hampshire Figures
In 2013 there was a total of 2500 accidents on
Hampshire roads, excluding the motorway.
623 road users were killed or seriously injured
38 of the 623 figure were children under the age
of 16
Hampshire’s Targets
To reduce the number of people killed or seriously
injured (KSI) in road traffic accidents on
Hampshire roads by 20% from 2004 to 2008 average by 2020
To achieve 50% of the targeted reduction by 2015
So what can you do to be safe?
Firstly, if there is risk then don’t take them. Risks will cause problems if they don’t go your way. You also have time to cross the road. Don’t rush your self
Just concentrate on both sides of the road. If your listening to music, just switch it off when you are crossing.
If your walking on the pavement go far away from the roadside as you may possibly get hit by a swift car, as seen before.
Go to the closest traffic light. They usually have a crossing point. That way you can continue listening to your music because you know that the cars have stopped, but still…
STOP, LOOK, LISTEN, THINK
So what can yourself and parents do?
A really good thing for parents to do is to teach their children how to cross the road. If children don’t learn, then they may have an accident. Apparently, some of the children(0-15) who had been seriously injured ‘ never really had grips of crossing a road’.
For parents, you must hold your child’s hand, especially if they are under the age of 10. Your taking a risk yourself for your child if your not holding they’re hand
Further more, cars are a reason why people get injured
If the speed limit is 30mph, then just drive 30mph, don’t go an extra
10 or 20mph. That’s the difference between death and a serious/minor injury.
20% of people had been injured said ‘ the car was travelling faster than the speed limit’.
Who is most at risk
The pedestrians are because there the ones that are likely to be
hit by a car.
Cyclists are at a slight risk, but drivers should know how to drive
past carefully and safely.
The pedestrians casualties usually peak at the age of 12 mostly
because of secondary schools and introducing the life of ‘the adult world’
Cyclist injuries at 14
Technically speaking, boys are at more risk than girls
