Revolutionary Comparisons There are several causes of American Revolution. For instance, the way began as a disagreement over the way in which Great Britain treated the colonies versus the way the colonies felt they should be treated the Americans believed that they were entitled to the full democratic rights of Englishmen. The British believed that the Americans colonies were just colonies to be used and exploited in whatever way best suited the Great Britain. These two conflicting views made war inevitable. Similarities that we see between all 3 documents are they had grievances between the King, they had petitions and they all wanted freedom. There are both similarities and differences in the message “The Declaration of Independence”, “Speech in the Convention”, and “The Patriot” film is trying to convey. The purpose of “The Declaration of Independence” is to proclaim the independence of the colonies to Great Britain. The document states that the colonies are not going to suffer under tyrannical rule any longer. You can see evidence of this in the following quote, “… that whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it and to institute a new government…” The purpose of Patrick Henry’s “Speech to the Convention” speech was to rally support for the fight for independence. Henry believed that fighting was the only solution left. You can see evidence of this in the following quote, “They are sent over to bind and rivet upon us those chains which the British ministry have been so long forging.” The purpose of “The Patriot” film was to get freedom and revenge. One quote that Benjamin Franklin states was “taxation without representation.” The phrase refers to the inhabitants of the colonies being taxed by the British government despite not having a representative government official to express the views of the citizens of the colonies. The petitions was presented by the colonist was to go up against the king to what he had done to the colonists and how he treated them. Patrick Henry’s “Speech to the Second Convention” speech is trying to state that Britain has brought their own troops to the colonies and the way is inevitable. The colonies have already tried everything they could to make it here, but nothing has been working, therefore action is needed. The following quote explains this statement: “Ask yourselves how this gracious receptions of our petition comports with these warlike preparations which cover our waters and darken our land.” In “The Declaration of Independence” it states how over twenty-six grievances on what the kind has done wrong and things that should change. For example, “He has affected to render the military independent of and superior to the civil power”. The president does not have power to declare war. He was granted the power by congress to invade a country for 60 days and then congress must declare war to continue. The Patriot movie didn’t have as many grievances as the other two documents.
