1.1 Background
The purpose of this report is to provide the reason, possible consequences and social attitude on the common worldwide issue of Genetically Modified Crops (GM Crops), which is also call Genetically Engineered Crops. Genetically Modified can be defined as “the use of modern biotechnology techniques to change the genes of an organism” (Healey 2010, p. 1). This process involves taking genes from other organisms, and splicing them into the desired object. If DNA is like a library, then genes are like individual instruction books. Genes make up the structural parts of the organism. First successful field test of GM herbicide tolerant cotton is carried out in USA in 1990 (Healey 2010). GM Crops are now very common in many countries.
1.2 Objectives
The first objective of this report is to find out the purpose of develop and produce GM Crops. The second objective is to verify the conditions and rules of growing and selling GM Crops in Australia. The third objective is to determine how safe GM Crops are, and the extent of their possible benefits and risks, as well as to outline the social and ethical concern on GM Crops.
1.3 Scope
This report focuses on the influences created by Genetically Modified Crops and public concerns on the production of GM Crops. Also it covers the requirements of selling GM Crops in Australia. The report includes a brief introduction of how the GM Crops produced. This essay will not examine the rules of labeling GM Crops in other countries. Moreover, future development of Genetically Modification will not be included. The development of genetically modification using in other organisms, like sheep and cow, are also beyond the scope of this report.
2. Procedure
A number of primary and secondary resources were used in this research report. These are including government sources, books, articles and globally website. Resources were chosen because of reliable. Most of them are publish by government and globally recognized broadcasting corporations.
The difficulties encountered were hard to find relevant resources as the issue is too general. Many of the resources are too long and hard to summarize.
3. Objectives

Genetically Modification is changes the genes in an organism by implicating biotechnology techniques, which is a process using selected individual genes transferred from one organism and inserting them in to another (Healey 2010).
Genetic modification of crops is not new, and rapidly adopt in farmland. It had been used in wide range. The aim of develop genetic technology is to construct a living organisms perform a specific useful task. This could be to increase the yield of crops, and age slower or simply to change crops’ colour and shape (Healey 2004). A report shows that there is almost 40% of the food crop in the world is lost every year due to the damage of insects, fungal diseases and spoilage (The Tomato of Tomorrow 2012).
