Why I Choose to Be A Republican
A time comes in a person’s life when he or she has to make a decision about potential political affiliation. I choose to be a Republican based upon economic, social, moral and religious factors that reflect my upbringing and my views. I believe that the Republican Party possesses those values and goals that are constructive to society. Personally, I am seeking a higher education, which will secure for me a good job and income. Before we examine what the Republican Party stands for, let’s review its history in brief. The Republican Party has a great history. It was founded in 1854 by anti-slavery activists and is one of the two major political parties in the United States. The Republican Party came to power in 1860 when Lincoln was elected president. During that time, slavery was abolished, the Union was saved and equal rights were given to all men.
Early on, the Republican Party had a slogan that said, “Free labor, free land, free men”. (11) With that, the Republican Party was expressing opposition to slavery, support for independent businessmen and the opposition to the plantation system. The ultimate goal was to expand freedom. Now a days we are witnessing the global spread of democracy that was initiated by a Republican president, George W. Bush following the 9-11 attack of 2001. At that time a “policy of preemption” was developed. The strategy holds that “the United States can attack any country and depose any political regime if they pose a security threat on the United States.” (1)
Also, the strategy supports democracy all over the world as well as unilateralism, which is the willingness to act without the United Nations or any allies’ approval. This democracy promotion was viewed as an instrument for combating terrorism. (2)
The Republican Party, also referred to as the Grand Old Party (GOP), supports business and economic growth. (12) This is strikingly different from the Democrat political party I think I can most support is the Republican Party. I agree with their views on issues certain like economy, national security, health care, education, and immigration. I feel like this party would be the best to help better America.
John McCain, 2008 presidential candidate, is a republican trying to find a solution to help the economy and the American families by lowering the prices of gas and food by strengthening the American dollar. I think this is a good idea because of the high gas prices and struggle to put food on the table for some people. When it comes to national security, the republicans strive to get the strongest military as possible. They feel that our country needs the best military to protect our homeland because the world is dangerous and terrorism is everywhere. Health care is another big issue that needs to be acted on as soon as possible. It is so expensive and not getting any cheaper if we don’t change something now. Everyone in America should be promised health insurance and the way to do that is to lower the general price for all. The next aspect to take into consideration is our education. Everyone wants their child to have the best education he or she can get. Republicans want parents to have a choice of public school, which are competing for greatness. I agree with this because choices are always good, especially when it comes down to an education. The last issue to talk about is immigration. John McCain and other Republicans want to strengthen and secure our borders to prevent illegal immigrants coming into the United States. Then they want to make sure people who apply for jobs are screened before they are eligible to work. Employers will then be prosecuted if they do not do this or if they continue to hire illegal immigrants. He also wants to clear out the waiting list for the people outside the United States legally waiting for their green card numbers before they come in. I think this is a good idea. It is not...tic parties philosophy. Over the past few...
