Relationship of the Messages of Amos and Hosea to the Mosaic Covenant
Assignment: From the oracles of Amos and Hosea show how their messages were true to the Mosaic revelation. (Think particularly of the Sinai covenant blessings and curses and the new beginning).
1.0 Introduction In completing this assignment, I shall first endeavour to answer the question: What are the key elements of the Mosaic revelation? In addition, a brief overview of the n New Beginnings promise will be presented. Following this, I shall then relate the oracles of Amos and Hosea to the Mosaic revelation in order to demonstrate that their messages were true to the Mosaic revelation.
2.0 The Mosaic Revelation There are three elements of the Mosaic I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the LORD your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. I will bring you into the land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. I will give it to you for a possession. I am the LORD'" (Exodus 6:2-8), emphasis added.
Notice here that the name of God translated in the ESV as the LORD is Yehowah (often rendered Jehovah in English), which is "the covenant name of God most prominently known in connection with His relationship with the nation of Israel. The name is found with reference to God's dealing with men before the flood (Genesis 2:4,5; 6:3), during the patriarchal period (Genesis15:1; 27:7; 49:18), as well as during the period of the Law (Exodus 20:2; Deuteronomy 6:4)."
As an important element of the Mosaic revelation is that God's will is for His people to share in His character, it is no surprise that He would expect them to be covenant keepers. However, "the authority of the covenants resides in Him and Him alone He is Lord."
2.2 The Purpose of God in the Mosaic Revelation God's purpose in the Mosaic revelation is fulfilment of His promise to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and fundamentally His self-revelation and ultimately the salvation of the lost. In Genesis 12:2-3 God gave the following promise to Abraham,
