“And there was again war with the Philistines; and David slew Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.” – David and Goliath. The Philistine giant, measuring over nine feet tall and wearing full armor came out each day for forty days, mocking and challenging the Israelites to fight. His name was Goliath. Nobody was brave or strong enough to fight against the giant. However, one day, a young man, small in stature, had heard the booming voice of Goliath. He was amazed that the Israelites were all afraid of this great beast. Therefore, he displayed his bravery through his willingness to fight such a battle, and didn’t give up until his enemy was the one with his head bowed in shame. That young warrior resembles myself, whereas Goliath the Gittite portrays VCU and The Honors College. My name is John Smith, and although I may be a small fish swimming in a big sea at VCU, I certainly have the bravery and willingness to take on the challenges and battles I would face if I were to be selected into The Honors College. Education can be defined as a form of learning in which the knowledge, skills, and habits of a group of people are transferred from one generation to the next through teaching, training, or research. In my opinion, I am completely and utterly satisfied with my current level of education, considering the fact that I am only seventeen years of age. However, I do in fact have some educational goals that I would like to achieve in the near future. These goals consist of finishing out my senior year with A’s in all my classes, especially my advanced placement ones and starting off my freshman year of college with good grades. In order to achieve such goals, I need to continue studying, working hard, and simply maintaining the mindset of a winner. Winners thrive on new opportunities and challenges. Therefore, becoming part of VCU’s Honors College could provide me with the chance to demonstrate and implement my determination and willingness to learn in an environment that is truly challenging and fulfilling. As of now, I do not have any serious plans for my future. I am the type of person who enjoys living their life day by day and making the most out of it. My parents have always told me that inside me there is all of the potential to be whatever I want to be and all of the energy to do whatever I want to do.
