Reaffirming guidance for 2014
10/24/2014

Last week the S&P 500 Index recovered from a 4.5% intraday drop Wednesday with a 4% gain Thursday and Friday. The week ended with a decline of only 1%. And while the rebound late last week was comforting, it is not indicative of the past.

We note that selling pressure covered various sectors of the market, specifically the two classic defensive sectors: health care and consumer staples.

The following table includes the S&P 1500 stocks that went up the most from Tuesday’s market close through Friday.

Some of those stocks increased because of announcements, including Chesapeake Energy Corp., which said Thursday it had agreed to sell roughly 1,500 oil wells in West Virginia and Pennsylvania to Southwestern Energy Co. for $5.4 billion.(They are selling assets)

The above information shows how volatile the market has been over recent weeks. Please note that their earrings have been matching expectations and do not seem dependent on the Fed’s easy money policy. A list of the 20 worst performers for the same period last week:
