aising a Reader Even though technology may be slowly changing from books to e-readers and computers, children must still learn how to read to succeed. The first five years of your child's life is the most essential time for learning language skills. There are many things you should know as a parent and activities you can do with your child to ensure that they learn to enjoy reading as a wonderful experience. Perhaps the most important activity you can do with your child is to read with them consistently. Rosemary Wells, author of Read to your Bunny, put it perfectly - "Reading together twenty minutes a day is the most important gift you can give your child." When you first begin to read to your child as an infant, what you read matters less than the reading itself. If you are reading to an infant or a very young toddler, it is more the sound of your voice, the fact that you are spending time with them, and the routine of reading together that matters. As your child begins to notice the words and pictures as you point them out, there are more activities you can add that will help your child develop the six pre-reading skills. Here are a few guidelines for reading with children:
- Keep books accessible to the children, perhaps on a low bookshelf.
- Make reading books together a bedtime routine.
- Don't use the words. Use only the pictures and make up your own story!
- Act out the story together.
- Use silly voices for each different character in the story.
- Utilize your library story time. Help your child pick out more books to enjoy together while you are there.
During the first five years of life children develop early literacy skills. These prepare them to learn and succeed and generally fall into six categories, as mentioned above. Here are their definitions and an activity to go with each.
Narrative Skills - The ability to describe things and tell stories; Ask open ended questions about pictures such as: "What do you think is happening here?" to encourage children to make up their own stories.
Letter Knowledge- Understanding that each letter has its own name and sounds; Write words your child finds appealing such as "dinosaur" or "sparkle" using magnetic letters and a crayon or pencil and paper.
Phonological Awareness - The ability to recognize and play with the smaller sounds that make up words; Play with rhymes. Read simple poems and have children guess the last word in the
not die of a cough," to which Montresor replies, "True---true." By saying this, Montresor inadvertently admits that he knows how Fortunato will die, showing that he intends to kill him. This is used by the author to build up the suspense and allow readers to understand that Montresor had planned to kill Fortunato before they event stepped foot into the crypt. The second use of foreshadowing is the description of Montresor's coat of arms. It is described as "a huge human food d'or, in a field…
Garnet Burgess Period 2A In “The Author to Her Book” Anne Bradstreet uses metaphors to expresses the complicated emotions of writing her book comparing it to raising a child. Throughout the poem the author gives the negative feels of raising a child implying that writing the book was tedious and difficult. The writer uses many examples of metaphoric language and personification. In line 1 the author described her book as “ill-formed offspring of my feeble brain” giving the negative emotion…
that depression ‘cuts through all layers of society’ and it does not discriminate against ‘class, age, gender, job or geography’. Her statement is used to awaken a sense of concern among her readers and to highlight that depression does not choose who it affects, somewhat alluding to the fact that the reader themselves might suffer from depression at one point in their lives. She continues by addressing depression as having a ‘debilitating force on a person’, this highlights mental illness as limiting…
“relationship” with an audience This does not mean (necessarily) how well the text makes one “cry,” but how the text moves a reader (prefix “e” means with+motion=emotion). Many times this appeal is how a writer will make an argument "matter" to readers. Advertisements do it all the time. Perhaps a writer will offer an anecdote to illustrate suffering or appeal to readers as parents concerned for their children. Some questions to consider: o Does the writer appeal to your emotions—feelings of…
Name Professor Name Course Date Preventing Poverty Through Literacy The ability to read is absolutely essential in order to function effectively within a society. as pie: Amazon wants to get a bigger share of e-book market, while Hachette holds its ground, stating that Amazon is trying to take away too much of its profits. Authors involved also complain that certain strategies used by Amazon, such as raising prices, lengthening shipping time, and removing buy buttons, make it more difficult for customers to order Hachette titles, thus leading to a decrease in its book sales. If you search "Amazon" and "monopolistic" on the internet, you'll find countless…

letter will contain the news that she no longer needs their services. First Cher should thank the employees for completion of the project and their services in an appropriate manner. In the letter Cher should not make a promise that she will rehire the employees again in the far future to soften the impact of the bad news, because it can…

the minimum wage could boost the economy and create 160,000 jobs. These claims may pass muster as applause lines at a political rally, but they can't pass the test of rigorous empirical research. The intuitive thinking on raising the minimum wage is straightforward: Raising the lowest wage that employers can pay will boost the paychecks of the lowest-paid workers and help pull them out of poverty. This line of logic persuaded 28 states to raise their minimum wage above the federal level between…
