Tiana Coach Pd.7 Topic: Racism in the U.S. Court System According to the dictionary, false imprisonment is a restraint of a person in a bounded area without consent. Eventhough false imprisonment is a common-law felony and tort, innocent people are still being wrongfully convicted. False imprisonments are often occurred because of someone’s gender, race, or a previous criminal record. For instance, Troy Davis was a victim of false imprisonment of a crime he didn’t commit. He was convicted of the murder of a police officer named Mark McPhail. Witnesses said they saw Davis with gun that shot and killed McPhail, but detectives weren’t able to find any physical evidence of Troy Davis. Unfortunately, Troy Davis was executed after Bill Clinton’s speech hit the air of him announcing to slow down the appeals process of the execution until physical evidence was present. Since there wasn’t any physical evidence to convict Troy Davis in the first place, the family of McPhail has never received correct justice for the murder of their son, father, and brother because Georgia police officials have never found his murderer. On the other hand, as an innocent man, Troy Davis’ family haven’t received justice either. Davis has been pleading innocent for more than fifteen years and has never received the right approach to his court appeals because of his ethnical background as an African American. Many believe that the execution of Troy Davis is equivalent to the history of any U.S. lynchings
