QWERTYUIOP tells of a young secretary’s struggle with her predecessor to hold on to her job by communicating through the electric typewriter. Lucy Beck who has just started working at Ross and Bannister’s finds the typewriter haunted by Miss Broome, her predecessor. The latter does not want anybody to take over her place and so haunts the typewriter, making it almost impossible for anyone to type out letters. Lucy is determined to hold on to her job. She battles it out with the spirit and finally is able to give Miss Broome’s spirit peace of mind. She does not disturb Lucy anymore.

Determination brings success. • Lucy determines to hold on to the job as secretary although she scared to the spirit of Miss Her husband, Leon Garfield, was the one of the famous author before she had known as a writer and was her best inspiration during writing her books and stories. In her early age, she didn’t get education in writing but she was in commercial art when she attended the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Arts from 1940 to 1942. However, she left the school to become an ambulance driver for the Auxiliary Territorial Service during World War II. After the war end, she held several different jobs to support her life including as an artist for the duplicating firm Gestetner Ltd. from 1947 to 1953. This was followed by three years as an employment bureau manager and also worked as a secretary for Whiltington Hospital in London from 1956 to 1964. Since she was a child, she had enjoyed storytelling and writing novels but she was shy to be a published author and was content to say in the background behind her famous author husband, Leon Garfield. However, she did occasionally give him ideas for his books, such as the popular Smith stories. Around 1980, she finally published her first novel for teenagers which were in horror types, The Haunting of Cassie Palmer. Vivien Alcock continued her writing in fantasies, ghost stories, and mysteries through 2001. Many of her writing were proved popular among teens and some of them were adapted to television as movies and drama series. During her life, she had published almost two
